Can you actually make money blogging? I had the pleasure of interviewing Sara, the owner of one of my favorite blogs ever, Gathering Dreams. If you're looking for an inspiring blog that has loads of incredible content, you will love this blog. It's not only beautifully designed and easy to navigate, it's loaded with interesting reads on travel, food, money and so much more. Sara's motto is do what you love and live your dreams.
She has such an amazing story, and I wanted to dig deeper into learning about how she got to where she is today. I know how much mindset plays a role in running a business, so it was intriguing to see what she could tell us about her journey. She provided great answers.
If you're considering starting a blog, you will find this interview inspiring!
Sara, you have an extremely successful blog. In your story, you talk about how you made $3800 after only 3 months, $35,000 your first year and after your second year, you transformed into a 6-digit earning blog. SO IMPRESSIVE! What kind of mindset did you have to keep in order to achieve this kind of success? How did you develop this mindset and maintain it?
I think no matter what adventure we embark on in life, we always have to give our best to find out if we can be successful at it. I believe this is true when you work for someone else or if you are starting your own business.
I always give 110% in everything I do. There is no point in starting something new otherwise.
But there is a big difference between giving 110% and being a perfectionist. What really helped to progress so quickly was to do things even if I knew they could have been better. It's really important to find the perfect balance between doing your best and understand when something is good enough.
The great thing about having your own digital business is that you can always go back and improve what you did in the past. Nothing is set in stone.
But above all, I believe that anything is possible. And everyone can achieve great things as long as they stop to limit themselves.
Don't ever let the fear of failing taking over. If something isn't working, challenge yourself to find out how you can change that.
It's also extremely important to keep track of your progress, see what works and what doesn't and do more of what works.
What types of roadblocks did you encounter on your journey and how did you learn from them? How did your mindset play a role when you came across challenges?
One thing that I learned in the past couple of years is that online businesses change at the speed of light. Something that worked 6 months ago doesn't work today.
I am not sure if these are real roadblocks per se, but I learned that I need to adapt and keep changing with the flow.
For example, when I started, it was much easier to get Pinterest traffic using group boards. Now, you have to create stronger personal boards and create lots of different pins every week. If you are a person that gets stuck in her own way of doing things, you won't be able to keep up. As I am happy to always change and adapt, it's easy for me to experiment with new things.
Do you think mindset really matters when it comes to achieving success?
It's hard to define success. Is it about money? Is it about freedom? For me, success is being able to do what I want, when I want, without having to worry too much about money.
And I truly think your mindset makes all the difference, and it can help you not only to achieve success but to achieve happiness in life. And believing I could achieve that has been essential.
What is the number one thing you did to help you get to where you are today with your blog?
Never stop learning.
I am always looking for inspiration, for other bloggers that work in different ways. I admire so many people for different reasons and I try to learn as much as I can from their strategies.
I also invested in a few courses to help me get to where I wanted to be faster. Yes, there are many free resources out there that can help you when you are starting out. But if you want to grow fast, there is nothing quicker than learning from the best. It can be hard to invest your money. I am pretty cheap and I don't normally overspend on things so I select extremely carefully the courses I invest in. But I don't think I would have grown my blog so fast otherwise.
But it's not just about buying a course. That's just the first step. You need to take action, as much as sometimes actions bring you out of your comfort zone. If you are not prepared to make changes and put into practice what you learn, you might as well not invest in a course in the first place.
Oh, and remember: you will never find a course that will tell you exactly what to do to be successful. Nothing is as simple as pressing a couple of buttons. No matter how much you invest, you are the one that needs to put in the hard work and experiment with your own business.
What is the biggest way you make money from your blog? Selling courses, affiliate marketing, Google Ads, or something else?
I don't have my own products. I make money through affiliate marketing and advertising. I would say my income is around 60% affiliate marketing and 40% advertising.
Is there anything else you want to add?
If you want to start a blog, an Etsy shop, work from home...anything you dream of doing...just do it! If you don't start, you will never know what could have happened.
And believe in yourself! No dream is too big!
