#1 Little Miss Cakes - Raeford, NC

We're Interviewing: Tasha, Owner and Cake Artist

About the Business!

I began Little Miss Cakes in January 2011 when my husband and I decided that homeschooling our children would be best for our family. Always an artist and a lover of sweets, I jumped into caking with excitement and hope that I would be able to help support my family while being a stay-at-home mom. I'm thankful for my customers. It brings me great joy to help them celebrate special life events. Little Miss Cakes has been named #4 in North Carolina by https://bestthingsnc.com/cake-shops/

What are your most favorite cake and icing flavors?

Although vanilla is the cake flavor most ordered, I'm partial to cream cheese and chocolate cake and my favorite buttercream is peanut butter.

How big (or small) of cakes can you create?

The smallest cakes I do are cupcakes. They are sold by the dozen. The biggest are 4 tier cakes serving approximately 120. However, if there are more than 120 guests to serve, I can do extra tiers for serving purposes only.

Do you deliver? If yes, what are your service areas?

I deliver to business event venues up to 30 miles (one way) from my location in Raeford, NC.

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

Along with wedding cakes, I provide cakes for all celebrations, cupcakes, and sprinkle decorated cookies as an add-on to coordinate with the cake.

What can you tell me about getting started?

To get started, you'll want to fill out the Inquiry Form on my website Contact page which will give me the details needed to provide you with a quote. I offer cupcake samplers for pickup for those looking to order a wedding cake.

#2 The Baker's Box - Hendersonville, NC

We're Interviewing: Mara, Owner/Pastry Chef

About the Business!

I started working in a donut shop when I was 15, went to Johnson and Wales University at 21 where I obtained my degree in Baking and Pastry. Over the next 20+ years I had the pleasure of working and creating wonderful wedding cakes in awesome hotels like The Gove Park Inn, The Grande Hyatt in Washington DC, Lansdowne Conference Resort, and The Bistro on Biltmore Estate. Then in 2010 I started The Baker’s Box out of my inspected home kitchen. In 2015, with my husband, we opened our first brick and mortar shop. Then in 2019, we moved again to a shop 3x as big. We should be calling this hope for a while!!

What are your most favorite cake and icing flavors?

My favorite combination is chocolate fudge cake with Bailey’s Irish cream filling, but among the brides, it’s lemon pound cake with raspberry cream cheese filling.

How big (or small) of cakes can you create?

I can do something as small as a 6” cutting cake, but the smallest tiered cake that I do is for 50 people. The largest tiered cake is 220.

Do you deliver? If yes, what are your service areas?

I do deliver- I don’t allow tiered cakes to be picked up in fact. I deliver to as far north as Weaverville, east as Lake Lure, west as Brevard and south as Flat Rock/ Tuxedo.

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

I offer cupcakes, dessert tables, mini pastries, pies, cookies, and grooms cake.

What can you tell me about getting started?

I do offer tastings. I usually recommend calling/ sending an email asking for a rough estimate before scheduling a tasting to make sure that I fit into your budget. And look at all of my pictures online to make sure that I do the style of cake that you’re looking for.

For Cake’s Sake is a home-based custom wedding & special event cakery in Garner, North Carolina.

I have been baking and decorating cakes since 2006 and have been in business since January, 2011.

My home studio is licensed, inspected, insured, and ready to create the cake of your dreams!

What are your most favorite cake and icing flavors?

My favorites are pumpkin spice cake with cinnamon buttercream and lemon blueberry cake with lemon frosting. My clients really like vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream and chocolate cake with cookies n cream!

How big of cakes can you create?

I make single dessert cakes that are 6 or 8-inches all the way up to 5 tier cakes for weddings or other special events!

Do you deliver?

I deliver tiered & carved cakes. My service area is mainly Raleigh, Cary, Garner, Clayton, Knightdale, Smithfield, and Fuquay-Varina. However, I will deliver outside of this area for a travel fee.

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

I do offer specialty cakes for other events – sweet 16 parties, birthdays, baby showers, etc. I do the occasional dessert cake as well! Seasonally, I offer hot chocolate bombs and chocolate piñatas.

What can you tell me about getting started?

I usually start by recommending a cake tasting & consultation. I bring a few samples of cake & frosting/filling which potential clients can taste on the spot or take home with them. Then we spend some time discussing their vision. Some have already picked out some inspiration photos from the internet while others describe their venue, dress, colors, etc. and have me design something. Either method works for me!

#4 Cake Expressions by Lisa - Huntersville, NC

We're Interviewing: Lisa, Owner & Lead Cake Artist

About the Business!

After graduation from the New England Culinary Institute I worked as a Pastry Chef at several properties including the Arizona Biltmore, The Wrigley Mansion Club, Sun Valley Resort and the Duquesne Club in Pittsburg. I was fortunate to work and study under a few amazing Pastry Chefs who gave me a great foundation in baking, pastry and cake decorating. My husband and I relocated to the Charlotte area in 2001 and I quickly realized there was an opportunity for cake artists.

I opened my business in September 2001and have been incredibly busy ever since. In 2009 we were awarded a BOB award for Best Wedding Cakes in Charlotte and have also won numerous Best of Weddings from The Knot and Wedding Wire.

What are your most favorite cake and icing flavors? Is there a favorite or “most popular” among clients?

We offer a wide variety of cake and filling flavors, but there are definitely a few favorites. Year round the almond cake with salted caramel buttercream filling and chocolate fudge cake with Kahlua cream cheese are hugely popular. In the fall and winter our spice cake with cream cheese filling is made weekly. In the summer we often make coconut cake with key lime buttercream.

How big (or small) of cakes can you create?

Our smallest wedding cakes start at 2 tiers for 35 people and go all the way up to 8 tiers for 600.

Do you deliver? If yes, what are your service areas?

We do offer delivery for 3 tier or larger cakes. We are located in Huntersville, NC but regularly deliver to Charlotte, Cornelius, Mooresville, Ballantyne/South Clt, plus Fort Mill & Rock Hill, SC. For larger weddings we do travel further when possible, and in fact delivered a cake and desserts all the way to New Jersey!

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

While specializing in wedding cakes we also make groom’s cake, event cakes, cupcakes, dessert tables and our “almost famous” macarons.

What can you tell me about getting started?

The best way to contact us is through the form on our website. The more information you can give us about you event the better to help us understand how we can serve you best. We can then give you an estimated quote and/or setup a consultation and tasting.

#5 Artsy Cakes - Winston-Salem, NC

We're Interviewing: Jeanne, Owner & Baker/Artist

About the Business!

I started baking over twenty years ago in Southern California and moved to North Carolina in 2017. I am an artist, and I discovered a passion for creating delicious, edible works of art through baking birthday cakes for my six kids and their friends years ago. As my business grew organically, my focus changed and shifted to weddings and large events.

Do you have a favorite flavor?

I offer a wide variety of flavors, and my clients often say that one of their favorite wedding planning experiences is coming to tastings, finding the pairings that they love and designing their dream cake. My most popular flavor is chai tea with caramel filling and a caramel buttercream. It’s soft, moist texture is so comforting. Clients also love my Tahitian vanilla bean cake combined with a mixed berry compote. I use American buttercream frosting traditionally, but I also offer ganache and marshmallow fondant. When planning a wedding cake, we look at the size, structure and weather projection to determine which finish will be best suited for the cake. For example, on hot, humid days, a fondant overlay can be a wise choice.

How big of cakes can you make?

I enjoy a challenge and have made tiny cakes and very, very big cakes. The largest cake that I have made to date was a 30” diameter at the base and had 13 tiers of various heights standing over 5’ tall!

Do you deliver?

Creating wedding cakes takes time and I want to make certain every cake arrives at its destination in perfect condition, which is why I prefer delivering orders myself whenever possible. I offer free or low cost delivery in The Piedmont Triad.

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

While I do specialize in wedding cakes, dessert tables and groom’s cakes are really fun additions to any wedding. A groom’s cake is often served at the rehearsal dinner or alongside the wedding cake. It is frequently a sculpted cake that represents the hobbies or characteristics of the groom. It is a special (and delicious) way to honor him. Dessert tables are another popular option at weddings, and I offer a full menu of choices to add onto your wedding package.

What can you tell me about getting started?

It is recommended that you call to schedule an appointment for a tasting as soon as possible and bring your invitations, pictures of florals, fabrics, the venue, or any inspiring design details from your wedding. The cake should be a focal point of the reception, tying together other wedding design elements into one beautiful show-stopping focal piece.

#6 Sweet Elegance - Ashville, NC

We're Interviewing: Lindsey, Owner

About the Business!

Sweet Elegance is owned and operated by Pastry Chef Lindsey Galvez. After completing her degree in Restaurant and Food Service Management at the University of Central Florida, Lindsey cultivated her pastry and cake decorating skills in the workplace. She enjoyed the opportunity to learn and grow through working at several of Florida’s resorts and theme parks, Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel and SeaWorld Orlando to name a few.

As Lindsey’s career progressed, she found herself looking to mature professionally and be challenged in new and exciting ways. Chasing this ambition brought her right here to the beautiful mountains of Asheville, NC in 2014 where she accepted a position at the Grove Park Inn participating mainly in the wedding cake program. It was there that Lindsey truly honed her decorating skills.

After 10 years of corporate pastry employment and many years of home baking, Lindsey felt it was time to strike out on her own and in 2017 Sweet Elegance was officially started.

Specializing in wedding cakes, Sweet Elegance is pleased to design and execute one of a kind, personalized cakes inspired by your tastes and design requests. We put an emphasis on elegance and attention to detail to ensure our creations provide absolute satisfaction and instill lasting memories.

What are your most favorite cake and icing flavors?

My favorite flavors change all the time, right now my favorite is probably chocolate cake with ganache. So rich and satisfying! I find the popular flavors with my clients change with the season. The apple spice cake with apple filling is by far the most popular in the fall and in the summer, many people choose the vanilla cake with our fresh, scratch made fruit fillings. The rich and decadent chocolate cake is always a top pick as well.

How big of cakes can you create?

The smallest size cake I make is a 6” which serves about 10. The largest cake I have made was a 7 tier which served about 400! Needless to say, there is no cake too large or too small for Sweet Elegance.

Do you deliver?

Yes, for an additional fee. I will deliver within one hour of the shop. If the customer is ordering a smaller wedding cake(2 tier), cupcakes, or mini desserts they also have the option of picking the order up from the shop.

Do you offer anything besides wedding cakes?

Yes! I do cakes for all occasions. Check out the specialty cakes tab on the website to see tons of birthday cakes, groom’s cakes, and other fun cakes. I also offer a variety of mini pastries for when clients want to provide a dessert table for their event. French macarons, cheesecake, lemon bars, cookies, brownies, and more. See a full list of options under the menu tab on the website!

What can you tell me about getting started?

The best way to get started is to email me with the key details of your event. Date, location, number of guests, and design description/ inspiration photos. With that info, I can check my availability and get you a preliminary price. Next, we can schedule a tasting, which includes your choice of 3 cake/filling/icing combinations. During the tasting/consultation we will discuss any questions you have, the final details or your order, and the process of booking your event!
